Severe Bruxism: Treatment Options

Severe bruxism is the most serious form of the bruxism condition. Although it can develop in children it is much more common among adults. Some people do not have that serious of symptoms and may not have to worry too much about it but for others, those with severe bruxism, it can cause problems that are too serious to avoid. There are other people who have severe bruxism and who really suffer the grunt of it.

They may end up with chipped or even missing teeth, infections of the gums, soreness of the jaw and neck and more problems. Basically any person who has bruxism that is so bad it is causing them problems in their day to day life or making them put out money to get their teeth fixed it is considered to be severe. People can be stressed out for all sorts of different reasons whether they are waiting on a promotion at work or having personal problems in a relationship. Doctors know that stress and anxiety are the main causes of bruxism and so this is their main focus and concern when it comes to treatment.

There are lots of different things that will help you reduce stress in your life. However for others further treatment will be required. Some people need to wear a mouth guard and this is usually best when you have severe bruxism because it will prevent your teeth from damage. The mouth guard will not actually prevent the person from grinding their teeth but does work well to keep them protected in case the person does.

For people who experience soreness in the jaw and face in the morning they can use ice or wet heat to the affected area. Drinking plenty of water and eating nutritiously is also important with a condition like bruxism because it will help keep the body strong. There are physical therapy stretching exercises that can help restore a natural balance to the muscles and joints on the side of the head. Massages work well and especially if you can do it yourself or get a friend to help out right before going to bed at night, you stand a much better chance of making it through the night without grinding your teeth.

Getting a massage right before going to bed at night can be extremely helpful as this loosens and limbers the muscles and prevents you from grinding your teeth at night. This way the muscles will basically be trained and will be less likely to clench up and bite down through the night. Even the seemingly simplest things you do can be a huge help. As long as you are working alongside your doctor and going through trial and error to find something that works, you can find relief of your bruxism.
