Helpful Tips for a US Visit

A trip to the US is fun for the entire family. It is a vast country with different attractions that can please everyone. The US is host to millions of visitors each year, with summer being the peak tourist season. A great vacation can be ruined if you do not follow some basic rules and procedures.

Find out all the entry requirements and procedures that must be followed for visitors to the US. Be prepared to provide a US address where you will be staying. The customs official will require a filled out Customs and Border protection declaration form.

Obtain a valid visa and ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip. The visa does not guarantee an entry into the US. Visitors to the US are fingerprinted before entry. You must provide answers to questions regarding the purpose of the visit and length of stay.

Some items like fruits, vegetables, plants, meat, poultry, and hazardous substances may be prohibited from entry. Be aware of regulations concerning items prohibited for entry. Make sure you declare the items on the customs form.

You can bring and take out any amount of foreign or US currency from the US. If you plan on bringing more than the equivalent of 10,000 dollars you must report it on the Customs form. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere and are the preferred choice of payment. Call your credit card company before you leave and inform them about your travel plans. Also find out about any fees and extra charges for transactions made abroad.

The US does not have a system of socialized care. You are responsible for the costs of medical treatment which can be very expensive. It is important that you purchase medical insurance to cover your medical expenses. In case of a life threatening emergency you can call 911 for assistance.
